Kaas and Thoseghar are plateaus of flowers, a few kilometers ahead of Satara, are a magical piece of land and are one of the global biodiversity hotspots. These places display one of the most spectacular natural events of wild Maharashtra during the latter half of the year. With hundreds of shades of millions of tiny wild flowers spreading across the horizon, the nostalgic earthen smell of the soil along with the dramatic play of lights amidst the clouds against the blue vast sky make a truly breathtaking spectacle for a human eye. The lateritic soil crust of this place being very thin, is deficient of nutrients and thus doesn’t nurture growth of big trees and shrubs. Lack of much of grass here therefore avoids the grazing animals and hence these wild flowers get abundance of sunlight, water and air thus creating carpet layers of flowers in various stages of bloom as far as vision goes. Then there are the insectivorous plants in abundance throughout the plateau. Kaas, is not only a botanist’s paradise but also a photographers heaven.
