ARUNACHAL BIRDING JOURNEYS

Special Tour 6 days Availability: February 20, 2027
Namdapha Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh is one of India’s most spectacular birding destinations, where the Eastern Himalayas meet the Indo-Burma biodiversity region. The dramatic change in altitude, from tropical lowland forests to high mountain passes, creates an extraordinary variety of habitats and an equally impressive diversity of birds. The state records around 850 bird species, making it a dream destination for serious birders and wildlife photographers.
What makes this journey truly special is the diversity of habitats within a single expedition, from warm tropical rainforests and river valleys to misty subtropical forests, temperate forests and high mountain passes. Every change in altitude can bring a completely different set of birds. And in places like Mishmi Hills and Namdapha, even a seemingly ordinary roadside stop can turn into an encounter with a bird that is rarely seen anywhere else in India.

Namdapha National Park
One of the largest and wildest protected areas in the Eastern Himalayas, Namdapha stretches from lowland tropical forests to high-altitude habitats. Its enormous altitudinal range supports an exceptional mix of birds, including hornbills, trogons, kingfishers, babblers, pheasants and several rare forest specialists. The park is also renowned for its pristine, relatively untouched wilderness.

Tezu & the Lohit region
Tezu provides an important gateway into the eastern Arunachal landscape, where forested foothills, riverine habitats and surrounding hills create excellent opportunities for exploring the diverse birdlife of the Lohit region. It is a great transition from the lowland forests towards the higher elevations of the Eastern Himalayas.

Walong
Set deep in the eastern Himalayas close to the India–China frontier, Walong offers a completely different landscape and birding experience. As the altitude rises, tropical forests gradually give way to temperate mountain habitats, bringing the possibility of encountering high-altitude Himalayan species amid spectacular mountain scenery.

Mishmi Hills
The Mishmi Hills are arguably the crown jewel of this expedition for a dedicated birder. The region is famous for its remarkable concentration of rare, range-restricted and Eastern Himalayan species, with birdlife changing dramatically as you climb through different elevations. Specialities associated with the region include Mishmi Wren-Babbler, Sclater’s Monal, Blyth’s Tragopan, Ward’s Trogon, Beautiful Nuthatch, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Purple and Green Cochoas and several rare babblers and laughingthrushes.

Arunachal is not just a birding destination, it is an expedition into some of the most remote, pristine and biologically rich landscapes in India.
